Are you ready to rediscover the roots of social work, use community development in your practice, and make a real difference in your community? Join us for an in-person 3-day CPD training on Community Social Work, hosted at Brunel University this spring! What You’ll Gain • Insights into the historical and modern significance of community development in social work. • Practical skills in community engagement, participation, and strategies for addressing today’s challenges. • Experience the power of community-building through doing. • Learn from leading scholars and practitioners in the field, including Professor Fiona Verity, Dr. Cristina Asenjo Palma, and Dr. Yohai Hakak. Session 1 (9th May): Introduction to Community Work • Explore the historical roots of community work and its role in social work. • Understand the UK social context and what ‘community’ means in practice. • Reclaim community work in social work through investigative approaches. Session 2 (30th May): Community Work in Practice • Learn about participation frameworks and how to engage communities effectively. • Explore strategies like community mapping, dialogue, and connecting shared interests. • Practice applying these approaches through interactive activities. Session 3 (20th June): Reclaiming Community Social Work Today • Address challenges like budget cuts, managerialism, and the depoliticization of social work. • Reimagine social work practice through creativity and appreciative inquiry. • Develop a network for community-focused social work in London.
